10 Breathtaking Cloud Formations

Have a look at the pictures below”and you never know, they may inspire you to look up to the sky every once in a while.

Florence, Italy

As Frank Slack stood over the Arno river, the combination of the setting sun and clouds rolling in produced this magnificent yellow and gray sky.

Huntsville, Alabama

Wes Thomas was lucky enough to witness these low, fast-moving clouds one night over Jones Valley. To produce the blurred effect, he set the camera to a 30-second exposure.

New York, New York

While walking the Brooklyn Bridge, Ben Brown captured this red sky moment minutes after a summer shower soaked the city.

Rio Vista, California

Looking out toward Mount Diablo from the patio of her home, amateur photographer Rebecca snapped this mixture of red clouds and a blue sky.

Walla Walla, Washington

When the sun is unusually high and the temperature is hot, sometimes a circumhorizontal arc like this one forms”which was immortalized by Lynn Suckow one summer afternoon.

Valencia, Spain

According to Marialuisa Wittlin, these lens-shaped clouds loomed over the mountains all day and she was able to get a shot of them before the sun finished setting”when this lovely scene disappeared.

Buskerud, Norway

For almost an entire month in January 2008, these nacreous clouds”which are known for their mother-of-pearl colors and only form in frigid temperatures”graced the Scandinavia skies.

Central Illinois

When sunlight is diffused through thin clouds with uniform water droplets, it produces vivid colors like these in the photo above”a phenomenon called iridescence.

Santa Fe city, Argentina

Impressive Supercell!!!
perfect lights under the dark clouds

after 8 month of drought.
Although it seemed that rain was pouring, only 25 mm (1 in.) fell.
Note the size of the clouds compared with the small lights of cars going through the highway and the buildings of the city in the background.

Aurora Borealis i

Shot very early hours of the morn (0630 am sgp time) . It was dark .

Nippon Airline Struck By Lighting In Osaka - AMAZING

Nippon Airline Struck By Lighting In Osaka - AMAZING
Wow! Once in a lifetime for the crew, and photographer.

Entered the nose and exited the tail. Reckon what the peak voltage was??

Never mind the voltage, the peak current was phenominal , the voltage across the plane must have been low since the plane was acting as a conductor. If the plane was a bad conductor (high resistance) it would have melted the plane. The fact that the plane was able to conduct the current saved the day.

Spectacular shot of a Nippon Airline being struck by lightning in Osaka .
Amazing that the aircraft itself and the people and equipment inside can survive such a hit!

Even more amazing that there was someone to film it in real time!!

This is in normal time

This is in slow motion

This is a still photo just on initiation of the bolt.
Notice the ground and air bolt feeder strike at the same time.

Incredible Faces in the Rock

Image: Christopher Fay

Now, leaving the legends, this awesome mountain face includes a whole mountain range and numerous fir trees. Unfortunately, Florida-based photographer Christopher Fay did not include any information about the location. Maybe someone will recognize it. What does the face remind you of, is it more Yoda or Gremlins?

This is another mountain showing a face in profile, also on Crete. It looks similar to Picture 2 but look at that nose and the elegant forehead! Crete seems laden with legends, but we knew that already from reading Greek mythology.

This mountain top in Estes Park, Colorado does not only have a face, but doesn’t the top part going to the right look like a howling bear? Or maybe one starts seeing hidden faces and animals everywhere after looking at too many rock faces…

Here, the snow on this mountain in Iceland contributes in forming a rather grumpy looking face. No wonder mountaineers talk about the ‘north face’ of a mountain.

In this picture of Lookout Mountain in Rock City, GA, the top of the mountain seems to be the headgear for the face underneath. Gives the term stone faced a whole new meaning

The guard of this mountain seems to have been immortalized as a face jutting out of the mountain. No wonder it was popularly known as the ‘Old Man of the Mountain’. This rock face could be found in Franconia Notch State Park in New Hampshire until May 2003. Then, after hanging around for 12,000 years, the whole face fell off, just like that.

This astonishingly real looking mountain face is located in Junagadh in Gujarat, India. The mountain is also known as Girnar Hill and is here seen from Bhavnath Temple. The photographer cheated a bit by turning the picture by 90 degrees, but the result is stunning. The five peaks of the mountain range are each adorned by intricately carved stone temples. As a pilgrimage, Hindus and Jains climb from peak to peak (around 8,000 steps). Legend has it that climbing Girnar barefoot will earn the pilgrim a place in heaven.
